‘I know a girl made of memories and phrases, lives her whole life in chapters and phases…’

~ Jimmy Buffet ~

Unwritten

Sitting in my car waiting for the torrential downpour to subside, it seemed as good a time as any to collect my thoughts into a column of sorts.

As I approach the one-year anniversary of my making the fairly steep transition from the world of weekly newspapers to that of corporate marketing, it strikes me how very much things have changed in my life over the course of the last 12 months.

The obvious day-to-day tasks aside, there are a million little nuances to notice—the mundane things, from going to bed slightly earlier, partly out of sheer exhaustion, but mostly to be able to rise and shine and begin the workday at a “normal” time; to gauging traffic and weather patterns and selecting what playlist best suits my morning commute on any given day.

But there are also the tangibles—being able to leave at a normal time each evening and put aside the stresses of the previous eight hours, rather than take it home with me; the flexibility to freely plan weekend activities without an eye on the calendar, tracking special project deadlines and penciling in Saturdays to be spent at the office.

The differences are there, to be sure. But so is the writing, a love which remains; one I’ve been reluctant to relinquish, even in the absence of a weekly column to curate. Rather than being relegated to a deadline, they come in random, inspired bursts, usually spurred by a particular event. Or rain delays.

On the flip side, I’ve been fortunate to have even more opportunities to explore my passion for photography, making the most of each sunset and beach scene, in hopes of capturing the visual for some future project-to-be-determined. Now, if only I could find a way to parlay that hobby into something a bit more lucrative...but I digress.

They say the only constant is change, a sentiment I’m certain I’ve shared in any number of previous columns. Truth is, we are the ones who are constantly evolving, growing and adapting to all that surrounds us.

The process may be infinite; but so, too, are the possibilities.
