Glancing Back and Moving Forward

‘Tis the season of giving, of celebrating with friends and loved ones, of looking ahead to the new while being sure to cherish the memories of what has come before.

I tend to do this one of two ways, either through the written word, or more recently, through the lens of my (borrowed) camera.

It’s not that I choose to hide behind these mechanisms, per se; rather, I feel they provide me with a forum to best express my perspectives in a truly unique manner.

While perception is a subjective character trait to be sure, virtually every numerological and astrological analysis of my being has pointed to my being especially gifted in this area.

That’s not to say these qualities, or the ways in which I choose to express them exist only at this most wonderful time of year. But there is something to the nostalgic longing for days gone by which drives them up a notch.

This year, more so than most of late, has been one of considerable change and transition; perhaps not to those who thrive on such things, but undoubtedly for me.

In the process, there have been lessons learned on letting go - both physically and emotionally - of that which, ultimately, no longer serves a positive purpose in life.

Whether moving on from toxic situations or simply ceasing to focus on the negatives which, let’s face it, will always exist if we allow them to . . . it’s been a steep curve, to be sure, one I have still yet to fully navigate.

Perspectives, and perceptions of the people and the situations we encounter, are difficult to alter once they’ve taken root, especially those that have been cultivated over years.

Of course, simply flipping the calendar page to January doesn’t necessarily mean change.

{Actually, scratch that metaphor, as calendars don’t typically “flip” to a new year. That would require purchasing a new one. Ironically enough, if you’re in the market for a stunning collection of scenic photos of Long Island in calendar form . . . alright, alright, I digress.}

But in all seriousness, to truly move forward means far more than simply altering your environment, or the cast of characters you associate with. It’s a choice, one you make internally, then gradually begin to work into your daily being.

Maybe this is the year it becomes your “new norm.” Maybe not. Regardless, there is always progress to be made, perspectives and perceptions to evolve . . . and most importantly, things - and people - to be thankful for.
